U.S. Counties That Do Not Accept eRecording (2025 Guide)

Find out which U.S. counties do not accept eRecording in 2025. Complete state-by-state list with guidance on Remote Online Notarization (RON), mortgage recording, and Knoxville, Tennessee insights.

Introduction: eRecording, RON, and Mortgage Recording

Electronic recording (eRecording) has transformed how real estate documents are filed across the U.S. In 2025, more than 2,400 counties and jurisdictions accept eRecording, covering about 90% of the population. This includes most metropolitan and suburban markets, such as Knoxville and Knox County, Tennessee.

For notaries, title companies, and lenders, the key question is:
Can a RON-notarized mortgage or deed be recorded in every county?

  • Counties with eRecording
RON-signed mortgages and deeds can usually be submitted electronically through authorized vendors like Simplifile, CSC, or ICE.

  • Counties without eRecording (listed below)
RON is still legal under state law, but recording offices in these areas will not accept electronic submission. Instead, documents must be printed and hand-delivered, mailed, or sent by courier.

  • Caution: Even some counties that show eRecording acceptance may impose restrictions, such as requiring wet-signed scans. Always confirm with the county recorder or your title underwriter before closing.
